Willa’s Books & Vinyl | The Longest-Standing Black Bookstore in Missouri — A Legacy Tribute

She Started on the Corner of 18th and Vine. Thirty Years Later, an Entire Community Showed Up to Say Thank You.

In 1994, Willa Mae Robinson set up a table on 18th and Vine in Kansas City, Missouri, with a collection of books by Black authors and a love for Black history that started in her childhood in Arkansas, where her father — an avid reader — taught her that stories were something worth keeping.

That table became a store. That store became the longest-standing Black-owned bookstore in the state of Missouri.

For three decades, Willa’s Books & Vinyl was a living archive — 15,000 pieces of art, literature, and music, all by Black people. First editions behind glass, including a copy of Frederick Douglass’s autobiography from 1864. Vinyl records on a turntable that was always playing when the doors were open. A space where, as one longtime customer said, walking in felt like walking into someone’s home.

Willa Robinson was more than a bookseller. She was a student of Black history. She survived gentrification — forced out of her 63rd Street location in 2021 when a developer demolished the building — and reopened at 56th and Troost because she was not done yet. She was never done.

In 2025, at the age of 84, Miss Willa retired. Mayor Quinton Lucas attended her farewell. The Kansas City Defender — itself a Black-owned media institution — stepped in to preserve her collection and her space, transforming it into a public archive and community headquarters at 5547 Troost Avenue. The books are still there. The history is still there. Free, and open to the community.

Willa’s Books & Vinyl did not just serve Kansas City. It kept Kansas City’s memory. This is the kind of institution that LookForBOB exists to honor — the businesses that held the line before anyone called it a movement.

The archive is preserved by The Kansas City Defender. Visit the legacy at 5547 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, MO.
