Most athletes retire from the game. Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman decided to keep playing — just on a different field.

Legion Sports Bar opened in October 2023 at 700 Bellevue Way NE inside Lincoln Square North in downtown Bellevue, Washington — the vision of two Seattle Seahawks legends who spent three years building something that would outlast any season. Chancellor and Sherman, together with experienced restaurateur Leilani Wong, created a 7,500-square-foot sports and dining experience that is equal parts upscale venue and genuine community gathering space.

The name tells you everything. The Legion of Boom — the historic Seahawks secondary that delivered Seattle its first-ever Super Bowl championship in 2014 — was the most dominant defensive unit of its era. Its principles weren’t just football: brotherhood, accountability, camaraderie, the belief that only together do you get anything done. Those are the values Chancellor and Sherman brought off the field and into this building.

The food matches the ambition. Legion’s elevated soul food menu — blue corn hush puppies that pay tribute to Seahawks colors, catfish nuggets, Louisiana barbecue shrimp toast, burgers, wings, and classic comfort fare executed with real culinary craft — is overseen by Executive Chef Reginald Jacob Howell. Twenty-five massive screens make Legion the Pacific Northwest’s premier destination for watching any game, any time. The space includes a full lounge, main dining room, and a private dinner space that has become a destination for events.

Kam Chancellor grew up in Virginia doing barbecue for thousands of neighbors — a way of bringing community together across tension and difference. Richard Sherman has said the goal at Legion is to run the restaurant the same way they played: with genuine appreciation for every person’s contribution. ‘Without them, none of this is possible,’ Sherman has said of his team. That philosophy extends to the staff, the partners, and the community that has made Legion a fixture in downtown Bellevue since opening day.

For Black athletes who have historically been told to stay in their lane, Legion is a statement. It is proof that the skills, discipline, and leadership that built a championship also build a business — and that Black excellence belongs at the table, literally and figuratively.
