A Polished Man: The Black-Owned Downtown Greenville Boutique Where Confidence, Custom Suiting & Community Come Together

Charles Davis Jr. grew up in Clio, South Carolina — a small town in the Pee Dee region — and he was shy. Fashion was the thing that broke him out of his shell. A well-fitted bow tie. A pocket square placed just right. The feeling of showing up as the best version of himself. “I felt different whenever I looked my best,” Davis says. “It was much bigger than just looking good. It was about the confidence that I felt to be able to show up.”

That conviction became a career — first as a teacher, then as a school counselor, then as an assistant principal, and now as the principal of Brushy Creek Elementary School in Taylors, South Carolina, where he leads 800 students and 100 staff members. It also became a business. In 2021, Charles and his wife Tiffane — armed with her Business Management degree from NC A&T and an MBA from the University of Georgia — opened A Polished Man in downtown Greenville. Their mission was simple and long overdue: create a space where men could find exactly what they were looking for, in a place that spoke to their unique sense of style.

Most men’s stores carry everything and give careful attention to very little. A Polished Man flips that equation. The store is curated with intention — premium bow ties, neckties, and pocket squares from Carrot & Gibbs and Edward Armah; Saphir shoe polish; Secrid wallets; lifestyle accessories from Flint Leather Co. and S’well; and a skincare line built around Jack Black and MANTL. Every item is selected to help a man express himself through the details — because it’s the details that turn an outfit into a statement.

And then there’s the custom suiting experience. A Polished Man has relocated its studio to NOMA Tower in the heart of downtown Greenville — connected to the Hyatt — where the focus is entirely on one-on-one style consulting and bespoke tailoring. By appointment only, the custom fitting process is fully guided: Charles and his team walk each client through every choice, from fabric and silhouette to accessories and finishing touches. The reviews speak for themselves — a perfect 5.0 on Google, with clients calling it “impeccable,” “exquisite,” and beyond anything they’d experienced off the rack.

But A Polished Man reaches further than the fitting room. The Confidence Box Initiative donates accessories to young men in partnership with local schools — each box filled with ties, pocket squares, and seven affirmation cards designed to do for them what fashion once did for Charles: build the confidence to show up fully. Davis also wrote Not Yet Dad! — a children’s book exclusively available through A Polished Man — and partnered with First Tee, the South Carolina Children’s Theatre, the Salvation Army, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
